Gujarat has reached 1,879 megawatts (MW) of rooftop solar capacity, according to official figures. The capacity comes from over 500,000 rooftop solar systems installed under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
Most of these installations are in the residential segment, keeping the state ahead of others in household-level solar adoption.
Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, Gujarat has set a target of installing one million residential rooftop solar systems by March 2027. As per news reports, officials said the state has already achieved around 50% of this target.
When installations under earlier central and state schemes are included, Gujarat has crossed 1.1 million rooftop solar systems over the years.
Residential consumers in Gujarat have received subsidies worth ₹3,778 crore under the current scheme.
The subsidy structure offers ₹30,000 per kilowatt (kW) for systems up to 2 kW, ₹18,000 per kW for systems between 2 kW and 3 kW, and a maximum subsidy of ₹78,000 for systems above 3 kW. The support is intended to reduce upfront installation costs.
The state provides ₹2,950 as assistance towards regulatory charges for rooftop solar systems of up to 6 kW.
Network strengthening charges for this category have been waived. Residential consumers are not required to enter into net metering agreements, and no load limits have been prescribed for rooftop solar systems installed in homes.
Households are permitted to supply surplus electricity generated from rooftop systems back to the grid. No banking charges are levied on residential users for this surplus power. These provisions apply across both urban and rural areas, as per state guidelines.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has said Gujarat’s energy planning includes solar, wind and hybrid renewable sources, along with green hydrogen. Government data shows the state contributes a substantial share to India’s overall renewable energy capacity.

With 1,879 MW of installed rooftop solar capacity and over one million systems added across schemes, Gujarat remains the leading state in residential rooftop solar deployment while moving towards its 2027 target.
