Government is considering a WhatsApp-based chatbot for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana that would allow households to check the likely cost of a rooftop solar system, available subsidies and estimated savings, as per news reports.
This comes as authorities look to increase participation in the scheme and address queries that often arise before installation decisions are made. The PM Surya Ghar scheme targets the installation of rooftop solar systems in 10 million households by March 2027.
Government data shows that around 4 million households have benefited from the programme so far.
Reports suggest that the users would be able to enter details such as their sanctioned electricity load and the amount of their latest power bill.
Based on these inputs, the chatbot would provide an estimate of installation costs and financial assistance available under the scheme.
The proposed system would also take into account the consumer's location. After selecting a state and district, users would receive details of subsidies available from both the central and state governments, along with an estimate of savings that could be generated over the life of the solar system.
Vendor Details Through the Platform
The chatbot is expected to provide details of up to 5 vendors for installation. Users would also have the option to seek a callback for further information.
For access to the complete list of empanelled vendors, consumers would be directed to the scheme's national portal.
Once introduced, QR codes linked to the chatbot are to feature in awareness campaigns and promotional material related to the scheme.
Scanning the code would take users directly to the service on WhatsApp.

The proposed tool is to provide information on rooftop solar costs, subsidies, savings and vendor options through a single interface, as the government works towards its household coverage target under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
