In a landmark announcement on Tuesday, Google revealed plans to invest $15 billion over the next five years to build a world-class artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The project is set to become the company’s largest AI infrastructure initiative outside the United States, underscoring India’s rising prominence in the global tech landscape.
Describing the initiative, Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, stated that the Visakhapatnam facility would be Google’s largest AI investment anywhere in the world outside the U.S. The centrepiece of this initiative will be a 1-gigawatt data centre campus, designed to support cutting-edge AI workloads and scale Google’s cloud services across the region and beyond.
This advanced facility will act as a strategic node in Google’s growing global network, aimed at meeting the surging demand for high-performance computing and AI-driven services.
Initial projections from Andhra Pradesh state officials had estimated Google’s investment at $10 billion. However, the tech giant has now confirmed a significantly higher figure of $15 billion, reflecting its commitment to long-term capacity expansion and environmental sustainability.
Google’s Visakhapatnam announcement comes amid a global race among technology giants to build AI-ready infrastructure. In 2025 alone, Google is expected to spend $85 billion globally on data centre expansion to keep pace with AI’s rapid growth.
India, with nearly one billion internet users, has emerged as a pivotal market. Competitors like Microsoft and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have already pledged substantial investments in India’s digital infrastructure, recognising the country’s strategic importance in the future of cloud and AI technologies.

For Andhra Pradesh, this project marks one of the largest foreign direct investments in the state’s history. It signals growing international confidence in both the region’s technological readiness and India’s infrastructure at large.
