Electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for almost 7% of India’s passenger car sales in May, marking their highest penetration in over a year.
This surge comes amid escalating fuel prices, prompting a shift in consumer buying patterns towards battery-powered vehicles.
In May, EV sales soared to 21,953 units, while total passenger vehicle sales stood at 3,17,354 units, equating to a penetration rate of 6.9%.
This is a noticeable increase from 4.1% in January and 4.2% in February. The escalation reflects heightened concerns over fuel costs due to recent price hikes by retailers.
EV sales have consistently climbed since March, where they accounted for 5.9% of sales. The increase in EV adoption is influenced by growing consumer acceptance and economic factors.
This trend extends beyond cars, as electric two-wheelers made up 8.9% of motorcycle and scooter sales in May, compared to 6.7% in January.
Sales of electric two-wheelers were at 1,44,451 units out of a total of 16,20,000 units sold.

The growing market share of EVs, which has increased by nearly 3 percentage points over 4 months, highlights the influence of economic factors on consumer decisions.
With recent petrol and diesel price hikes, conventional fuel is less appealing, further boosting the attractiveness of EVs.
India's car market is witnessing a significant shift, with EV sales reaching nearly 7% in May due to rising fuel costs. This trend signals a broader acceptance of electric mobility, extending from passenger vehicles to two-wheelers, as consumers respond to economic pressures.
