Vahan data shows India registered roughly 15.61 lakh electric two-wheelers in the first three-quarters of 2026, as per news reports. That number is around 62% higher than the 9.61 lakh registrations posted during the same time frame a year earlier.

The market has clearly well gone past the full-year 2025 number though, which is noteworthy. In fact, there were only about 13.42 lakh electric two-wheeler sales during the entirety of 2025 with three months remaining in 2026 yet to be recorded.

September 2026 Adds Another 1.97 Lakh

September 2026 saw registrations of nearly 1.97 lakh units, an increase of 7.7% from August 2026. Electric two-wheelers also had approximately 11.5% of the total number of two-wheeler registrations during the month.

The category benefits from lower running costs, greater range, more charging points and wider service networks. The expansion of recognized producers additionally altered the market.

TVS Holds The Top Spot

TVS Motor had the largest share in September at 26.3%, followed by Bajaj Auto at 23.5%. Ather Energy accounted for 14.7%, while Hero MotoCorp-backed VIDA held 11.7%.

Ola Electric's share stood at 6.5%, compared with around 7.6% in August 2026. Together, TVS, Bajaj, Ather and Hero MotoCorp accounted for roughly 76% of registrations during the first nine months.

Competition Moves Beyond Electric Startups

The market now includes a larger role for traditional two-wheeler companies. TVS has expanded the iQube, Bajaj the Chetak and Hero MotoCorp the VIDA range, while Ather has continued building volumes with models such as the Rizta.

Smaller players are also finding space. River Mobility reached about 2.46% share during January-September, while Ultraviolette and Oben Electric stood at around 0.26% and 0.33%, respectively.

2026 Already Sets a New Mark

At 15.61 lakh registrations in nine months, electric two-wheelers have already crossed last year's annual level.

A simple annualisation of the nine-month figure comes to around 20.8 lakh units, although the source notes that this is not a forecast.

Conclusion

The 2026 registration figures show how quickly electric two-wheelers have expanded in India. With the full-year 2025 number already surpassed by September, the category is entering the final quarter from a much larger base.
