The Department of Posts has achieved a major breakthrough by successfully booking and delivering its first online order through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) on January 13, 2026.
Acting as a Logistics Service Provider, the department completed the delivery on January 15, 2026, marking its formal entry into India’s fast-growing digital commerce ecosystem. The inaugural order was placed by UdyamWell, an initiative dedicated to empowering artisans, farmers, and rural entrepreneurs with end-to-end digital market access.
UdyamWell focuses on supporting Bharatpreneurs by connecting them to wider markets through ONDC. The collaboration with the Department of Posts ensures that small sellers from even remote locations can access reliable logistics.
With its vast postal network, the department provides pickup, booking, transmission, and delivery services, enabling seamless movement of goods across the country. This integration is expected to reduce entry barriers for micro, small, and medium enterprises and encourage inclusive growth.
Currently, the Department operates on ONDC through the Click & Book model. Sellers using ONDC buyer applications can generate digital pickup requests and select the Department of Posts as their logistics partner.
Parcels are collected directly from seller premises, postage is paid at the time of pickup, and consignments are tracked through technology-enabled systems. This model simplifies logistics management for small businesses that often struggle with complex supply chains.
The onboarding of the Department of Posts brings credibility, affordability, and unmatched geographical reach to ONDC. With more than a century of public service experience and a presence in the remotest villages, the department is uniquely positioned to bridge the digital divide.
Its participation will enhance competition among logistics providers and offer sellers multiple choices based on cost and delivery speed.
The first ONDC delivery by the Department of Posts signals a transformative phase for India’s e-commerce landscape. By combining traditional trust with modern technology, the department is enabling millions of small sellers to join the digital economy. This initiative will accelerate inclusive commerce and strengthen the vision of a digitally connected Bharat.
