The Baloda-Belmundi Diamond Block in Chhattisgarh's Mahasamund district has yielded five diamonds weighing 1.22 carats during exploration conducted by NMDC-CMDC Limited, as per reports citing officials. The discovery was made in the Saraipali area after bulk sample material collected from the site underwent processing and examination.

According to officials, two of the recovered stones have been classified as gem quality. These whitish diamonds weigh 0.19 carats and 0.06 carats.

The remaining finds include a yellowish non-gem diamond weighing 0.32 carats and two brownish non-gem diamonds weighing 0.59 carats and 0.06 carats.

Discovery Follows Geological Surveys and Drilling

The exploration programme was carried out by NMDC-CMDC Limited, a joint venture between the National Mineral Development Corporation and the Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation.

Before sample collection, the area was studied through stream sediment surveys, geophysical investigations, and around 500 metres of exploratory drilling.

Based on these findings, nearly 200 tonnes of material were extracted and transported to NMDC's diamond processing facility in Panna, Madhya Pradesh, for testing.

Findings Confirm Presence of Diamond Mineralisation

Officials stated that the recovery confirms the presence of diamond mineralisation in the Baloda-Belmundi block. The findings will now be used to plan further geological studies to understand the extent of mineral occurrence in the area.

The recovered stones have been placed in secure custody at NMDC's facility in Panna. Officials noted that the joint venture does not currently operate a dedicated facility for storing diamonds recovered during exploration activities.

Further Work Required

The Mahasamund discovery is expected to support future exploration efforts in the region. However, the recovery of a small number of diamonds does not establish the size of the deposit or its commercial viability.

Additional drilling, sampling, and assessment will be required before any estimate can be made regarding the quantity and quality of diamond-bearing material present in the block.

Conclusion

The recovery of five diamonds from the Baloda-Belmundi Diamond Block marks an early outcome of ongoing exploration work in Mahasamund district. Further studies will determine the area's resource potential and whether additional diamond-bearing zones exist within the block.
