India’s naval communications network is set for a significant upgrade as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and global satellite communications firm Viasat prepare to implement advanced satellite systems to strengthen connectivity across naval platforms, as per news reports.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Viasat Inc will deploy high-capacity Ka-band satellite systems as part of the Indian Navy’s satellite communications modernisation programme.
The Ka-band systems will operate alongside existing L-band infrastructure, marking a transition towards a multi-band, multi-constellation architecture aimed at delivering higher throughput, wider coverage and improved reliability for mission-critical operations at sea.
On-ground implementation is scheduled to begin later this month, with equipment already positioned in the country.
Commenting on the initiative, BSNL chairman and managing director Robert Ravi said, “BSNL is proud to support the Indian Navy’s SATCOM modernisation by delivering advanced, resilient connectivity through our partnership with Viasat.”
From Viasat’s India operations, managing director Gautam Sharma noted, “With the equipment already in India and installation activities starting this month, we are pleased to support the Navy as it modernises its satellite communications.”
Todd McDonell, president, International Government at Viasat, added that combining L-band resilience with Ka-band capacity would significantly enhance connectivity for critical naval missions, underlining the company’s long-term engagement with India’s defence communications ecosystem.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is a state-run telecommunications provider with extensive ground infrastructure and experience in delivering secure connectivity for government and strategic users.
