Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has significantly increased incentives for rural health workers engaged across the state's public healthcare network, as per news reports. The decision aims to improve their morale and strengthen health delivery in remote areas.

ASHA and Mamta Workers Receive Major Incentive Boost

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar announced that Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) will now receive a monthly incentive of ₹3,000, tripling the previous amount of ₹1,000. Additionally, Mamta workers, who assist in maternity wards, will get ₹600 per delivery, up from ₹300. This notable revision reflects the critical role these community health workers have played since the introduction of the National Rural Health Mission in 2005.

Motivating Grassroots Health Workers

The government acknowledges the continuous efforts of these health workers, especially in rural regions where public health services are limited. ASHA workers are deployed at the village level in ratios of one per 1,000 population to support access to primary care and health awareness. Mamta workers are crucial to postnatal care, ensuring the well-being of mothers and newborns in government hospitals.

Conclusion

The revised incentive is likely to enhance motivation among these workers, leading to more effective health service delivery. However, questions remain over whether other rural worker groups like Anganwadi assistants and school meal cooks will receive similar support. Advocates expect these developments to spark broader policy changes in rural employment and welfare programmes.
