The National Health Authority (NHA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of West Bengal for the implementation of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).
With the addition of West Bengal, the scheme is now being implemented across all 36 States and Union Territories.
The agreement was signed in New Delhi in the presence of senior officials from the Centre and the state government.
Under AB PM-JAY, eligible families receive health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation.
In West Bengal, around 1.24 crore eligible families are expected to benefit from the scheme.
Including senior citizens aged 70 years and above, ASHA workers and Anganwadi workers and helpers, the total beneficiary base is estimated at about 1.43 crore families.
Since its launch in 2018, the scheme has authorised more than 12 crore hospital admissions, with treatment valued at over ₹1.82 lakh crore.
More than 44 crore Ayushman Cards have been issued across the country, while the programme currently covers over 62 crore people.
The government has also stated that out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure has declined from 64.6% before 2018 to 43.4%.
Over 36,000 government and private hospitals are empanelled under the scheme, providing cashless treatment to eligible beneficiaries.
The Centre is to provide financial support for the programme's implementation in West Bengal, while funds have also been released under the National Health Mission for the state's healthcare sector.
The signing of the MoU brings West Bengal into the national health insurance programme and extends its coverage to eligible beneficiaries across the state.
With West Bengal joining AB PM-JAY, the scheme has achieved nationwide implementation. The rollout is to extend health insurance coverage to eligible families across the state.
