
India and Australia held the 10th Australia-India Defence Policy Talks in New Delhi on May 8, where officials discussed defence cooperation, maritime engagement and military coordination, as per ANI reports.
The meeting took place as both countries continue to expand strategic engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary Amitabh Prasad, while Bernard Philip, First Assistant Secretary for International Policy, represented Australia.
The discussions covered bilateral defence activities, operational coordination, and industry-level engagement between the 2 countries.
Officials reviewed progress in military exercises conducted by the 2 countries over the past few years. The Ministry of Defence said both sides noted the increasing frequency and scale of defence engagements across services.
India’s participation in Exercise Talisman Sabre and Exercise Puk Puk in 2025 was discussed during the meeting. The 2 countries also reviewed cooperation in multilateral naval exercises and operational exchanges for mproving interoperability.
The talks included discussions on the first Australia-India Joint Staff Talks, which are scheduled to be held later this year. Officials also discussed steps related to coordination across maritime, land, and air domains.
Maritime cooperation remained one of the main areas of discussion during the talks. India and Australia reviewed naval participation in each other’s International Fleet Reviews along with exercises such as Exercise Milan and Exercise Kakadu.
Defence industry collaboration was also reviewed during the meeting. Officials referred to the Australia-India Defence Industry Roundtable held in Sydney in 2025 and Australia’s defence industry strategic roundtable conducted during the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi earlier this year.
The delegations further reviewed outcomes from the 2024 Australia-India Annual Leaders’ Summit. Discussions included plans to renew the Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation and work on a Joint Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap.
Both sides noted recent developments in bilateral defence engagement, including the annual Australia-India Defence Ministers’ Dialogue launched in 2025. Officials said existing defence mechanisms and military exchanges would continue over the coming months.
