Crude oil prices edged lower on Friday morning, October 16, 2026, as investors assessed possible changes to US sanctions on oil tankers and rising tensions in the Middle East, as per news reports. Brent crude futures fell 0.39% to US$105.51 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined 0.55% to US$97.43 by 00:12 GMT.

US Oil Stock Draw Supports Prices

WTI settled more than 3% higher on Thursday (October 15, 2026) after a substantial draw in US crude inventories supported prices. Brent crude ended the session little changed as traders weighed supply concerns against efforts to increase fuel availability.

The International Energy Agency agreed on Thursday to release more than 20 million barrels of diesel, along with oil remaining from the record emergency reserve release pledged in March. The measures aim to boost supplies and ease elevated energy prices.

US Considers Easing Shadow Fleet Sanctions

The Trump administration is considering lifting sanctions on certain vessels associated with the so-called shadow fleet, which has transported oil and petroleum products from Russia, Iran and Venezuela. A US official said the discussions were intended to help reduce record-high global freight rates.

The move follows Washington's temporary lifting of sanctions on Russian diesel fuel. The decision drew criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, European countries and some Republican lawmakers in the US Senate.

Any relaxation of restrictions could affect oil transportation and the availability of petroleum products in international markets.

Middle East Conflict Raises Supply Concerns

Escalating hostilities involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthis, alongside renewed attacks on shipping, continued to support oil prices. Attacks around the region's waterways have increased over the past 10 days.

Iran said it was stepping up strikes in response to the US blockade of its ports and tougher sanctions introduced last month.

On Thursday, the Houthis fired missiles at the presidential palace complex in Aden, killing two guards. The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen also reported dozens of attacks on Saudi infrastructure as the conflict intensified.

The developments have heightened concerns about potential disruptions to oil shipments through strategically important regional routes.

Conclusion

Crude oil prices remained under pressure on Friday morning despite continuing supply risks in the Middle East. Investors are weighing emergency fuel releases and possible changes to tanker sanctions against the threat of further disruption to regional oil shipments.
