Oil prices edged lower on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, as investors weighed renewed diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran against escalating military tensions in the Middle East, as per The Reuters reports. While geopolitical risks continued to support crude prices, hopes of a temporary ceasefire limited further gains.

Brent crude futures slipped US$0.35, or 0.4%, to US$88.87 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude for September 2026 delivery traded largely unchanged at US$82.47 per barrel. Both benchmarks remained below the multi-month highs recorded during the previous trading session.

Houthis Raise Fresh Supply Concerns

Markets remained on alert after Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis announced plans to impose a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia. The move has heightened concerns over potential disruptions to one of the world's largest oil exporters and increased uncertainty surrounding global energy supply routes.

Analysts noted that any disruption to Saudi Arabian exports could have a significant impact on international oil markets, given the country's central role in global crude production.

Ceasefire Proposal Caps Further Gains

Despite ongoing military action, reports of mediation efforts helped ease immediate market concerns. According to reports, Iran received a proposal from international mediators for a 10-day ceasefire aimed at preserving an interim agreement reached on 17 June and creating a pathway towards a broader peace settlement.

The diplomatic developments followed another round of US strikes on Iranian cities and retaliatory attacks by Iran's Revolutionary Guards on US military assets across the region. The US Central Command also confirmed additional strikes later in the day.

Market participants believe that while geopolitical tensions continue to support higher oil prices, expectations of possible de-escalation have prevented crude from extending recent gains.

US Inventory Data in Focus

Investors are also awaiting fresh US inventory data. Preliminary market estimates indicate that US crude oil and petrol stockpiles likely declined last week, while distillate inventories are expected to have increased. The figures could provide further direction for oil prices in the near term.

Conclusion

Oil markets remain highly sensitive to developments in the Middle East. While diplomatic efforts have temporarily eased fears of a wider conflict, ongoing military action and supply disruption risks are expected to keep crude prices volatile in the coming sessions.
