BSNL Set to Roll Out 5G in Delhi and Major Cities by September end

State-owned telecom operator BSNL is preparing to roll out 5G services in Delhi and other key cities by the end of September 2025, according to official sources. This development follows the substantial advancement in its 4G infrastructure, with over 93,000 towers installed as part of a broader target of deploying 1 lakh sites.
The company has already operationalised more than 70,000 of these towers, with further expansion planned. BSNL has also conducted 5G testing at numerous state capitals, such as Jaipur, Chennai, Patna, and Kolkata, using its newly deployed 4G sites.
Strategy and Timeline for Expansion
BSNL is adopting a phased, circle-wise approach to rolling out 5G, similar to the strategy it followed for 4G services. The full-scale 4G rollout is expected to be completed by June 2025, with a month’s time projected for upgrading the sites to 5G technology.
This structured expansion plan is being monitored for quality and performance before wider implementation. The network infrastructure for 5G is currently undergoing testing in regions where BSNL maintains a solid user base, laying the groundwork for seamless integration.
New Initiatives and Market Re-entry
BSNL is introducing several customer-focused initiatives. The telco has launched complimentary 4G SIM upgrades in select circles, offering 4 GB of free data valid for 3 months. It has also begun deploying base transceiver stations (BTS) across cities such as Pune, Kanpur, and Vijayawada.
Additionally, BSNL recently unveiled its own 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service named ‘Quantum 5G FWA’ in Hyderabad, with pilot expansions scheduled in cities including Bengaluru and Chandigarh. The initial 5G launch in Delhi will utilise a Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) model, marking BSNL’s strategic re-entry into India’s competitive telecom landscape.
