As per news reports, Apple has brought the TATA Group on board to manage repairs for iPhones and MacBooks in India. This is a shift in Apple’s service operations in the country and adds to Tata’s existing role in the company’s manufacturing ecosystem.
TATA is taking over the after-sales repair responsibilities from ICT Service Management Solutions, a local arm of Taiwan’s Wistron. The repairs will now be carried out at Tata’s iPhone assembly facility in Karnataka. The transition process is currently ongoing, according to the news reports.
Wistron will continue servicing its other clients in India but will no longer handle Apple-related repairs.
TATA already operates 3 facilities in South India that assemble iPhones. One of these also manufactures select iPhone components. Apple’s expansion of TATA’s role comes as the company continues to diversify its production base outside China.
In addition to manufacturing, the Karnataka facility will now also process repairs, especially for complex issues that can’t be addressed at Apple’s regular service centres.
India has seen a steady increase in iPhone sales. As per the Counterpoint report, around 11 million iPhones were sold in the country in 2023. Apple’s market share rose to 7%, up from 1% in 2020. The rise in sales is expected to increase the volume of repair requests.
Basic servicing for devices will still be handled at Apple’s official service centres, but more technical repairs will now be routed to Tata’s facility.
