India’s ambition to become a global smartphone manufacturing hub continues to gain momentum, as Apple pushes forward with plans to ramp up iPhone production in the country. Despite the return of several Chinese engineers from Foxconn's Indian facilities, the government and Apple remain confident that production goals for the upcoming iPhone 17 series will stay on track.
The Centre has stated that Apple has alternative solutions to address the situation regarding the return of Chinese professionals from Foxconn's India plant. According to a PTI report, the government is also actively monitoring the production targets at the Foxconn facility.
Apple is targeting production of 60 million iPhones in India this year, up from 35–40 million in FY 2024–25. Key manufacturing partners Foxconn and Tata Electronics are expanding operations to support this scale-up. According to the report, the temporary return of Chinese professionals involved in assembly, design, and training processes is not expected to impact these targets. Apple has put in place contingency plans and local workforce training to manage the transition.
Foxconn, operating in Tamil Nadu, is a crucial partner in Apple’s India production ecosystem and is supported under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. The Indian government is actively monitoring production targets and has facilitated visa arrangements for foreign experts. However, it clarified that any staffing adjustments are primarily a matter between Apple and Foxconn. The government expects companies to ensure continuity in production.

India’s iPhone exports reached ₹1.5 lakh crore in FY 2025, driven largely by shipments to the US. In March 2025 alone, 97.6% of exported iPhones were US-bound, reflecting a 219% export surge. This move was likely to stay ahead of any potential tariff hikes. CEO Tim Cook confirmed that all iPhones sold in the US during the June quarter would originate from India.
Apple’s expanding operations in India have created around 2 lakh jobs across its vendor network. Alongside Foxconn, Tata Electronics plays a vital role, managing former Pegatron operations and preparing new facilities. The easing of capital goods imports from China has further boosted production capacity. With India's smartphone exports gaining global recognition, the country is steadily positioning itself as a manufacturing powerhouse.
Despite operational challenges involving Chinese personnel at Foxconn, Apple is progressing with its iPhone 17 production roadmap in India. With increased output, growing exports to the US, and rising domestic capacity, India is firmly cementing its role in Apple’s global supply chain.
