Industry Outlook
- India’s alternative asset management industry has significant room for growth, supported by rising demand for managed investment products and alternative investment funds (AIFs).
- The share of AIF commitments in India’s managed investment products increased from 3.5% in March 2019 to 7.3% in March 2026. Managed investment products accounted for around 67.6% of India’s nominal GDP as of March 2026.
- Despite rapid growth, India’s AIF market remains relatively underpenetrated compared with global markets. AIF commitments stood at around 4.9% of India’s GDP in March 2026, compared with an AIF NAV-to-GDP ratio of approximately 42% in the European Union in 2022.
- India’s AIF industry has grown strongly, with total commitments increasing at a 29.2% CAGR between March 2019 and March 2026 to ₹16.9 trillion.
- Alternative investments are expected to remain among the fastest-growing managed investment products as HNIs, ultra-HNIs and institutional investors increasingly seek differentiated investment opportunities and potentially higher risk-adjusted returns.
- The AIF market is expected to grow at a 25–27% CAGR between March 2026 and March 2030, potentially reaching ₹41–44 trillion by March 2030.
- Category II AIFs accounted for around 75.2% of total AIF commitments as of fiscal 2026, making them the dominant category in the segment.
- The proportion of investments made against funds raised increased from 82.2% in March 2020 to 96.2% in March 2026, indicating increasing deployment of raised capital by fund managers.
- AIFs recorded a 29.2% CAGR between fiscal 2019 and fiscal 2026, significantly higher than the 18.7% CAGR for mutual fund AUM and around 11% CAGR for bank deposits during the same period.
- Despite this faster growth, AIFs remain much smaller in scale than mutual funds and bank deposits, indicating substantial headroom for further expansion.
