Industry Outlook
- India remains one of the world’s largest gold-consuming markets. Gold demand increased 5% to 803 tonnes in 2024 from 761 tonnes in 2023, before declining to 711 tonnes in 2025 amid a sharp rise in gold prices.
- India’s gold imports increased to US$69 billion in FY2026 from US$53.52 billion in FY2025, despite import volumes moderating to around 757.03 tonnes. Gold imports currently attract a 15% customs duty.
- Gold refining plays an important role in the domestic value chain. India’s gold refining market stood at around 333 tonnes, including 226 tonnes sourced from doré imports and the remainder from recycled scrap.
- The organised sector accounts for approximately 80%–85% of India’s formal gold refining capacity. Doré imports also offer a duty advantage of around 0.65% over refined gold, supporting domestic refining activity.
- India’s bullion market is gradually shifting towards organised players. The unorganised segment still accounts for around 58.4% of the market, while organised players represent approximately 39%.
- Digital gold is expanding access to gold investments, with investments possible from as little as ₹1. ETFs, coins and bars are also contributing to wider participation in the gold market.
- Augmont Enterprises operates across the organised bullion and digital gold segments, positioning the company to benefit from the growing formalisation of India’s gold market.
