Kiranakart Technologies Pvt Ltd, the parent company behind the popular quick-commerce platform Zepto, has had the food business license for its Dharavi distribution centre suspended by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This action followed a surprise inspection on Saturday, which uncovered multiple serious breaches of food safety regulations.
The inspection, led by food safety officer Ram Bodke under the guidance of Minister of State for FDA Yogesh Kadam and Joint Commissioner Mangesh Mane, revealed a range of issues at the Zepto distribution hub. According to the FDA, these violations were in direct contravention of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and its accompanying licensing rules.

Following these serious findings, Anupamaa Balasaheb Patil, Assistant Commissioner, Food, issued an immediate suspension order. This order, issued under section 32(3) of the Food Safety Act and Regulation 2.1.8(4) of the Licensing and Registration Rules, means that the Dharavi facility must cease all operations. It cannot resume business until it can prove full compliance with all safety regulations and receive formal approval from the licensing authority.
The FDA emphasised that this action is part of its ongoing efforts to crack down on unsafe food practices across the state. Rajesh Narvekar, Commissioner, FDA, stated, "Public health cannot be compromised. We are committed to strict and transparent enforcement."
An official statement from Zepto regarding the incident is currently awaited. The license will remain suspended until the Dharavi facility successfully passes a follow-up inspection and receives official reinstatement approval from the FDA.
