Vedanta Aluminium announced that it has signed an agreement with GAIL (India) Ltd to supply natural gas to its aluminium smelter in Jharsuguda, Odisha. This collaboration aims to minimise the carbon footprint and support Vedanta’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
The transition to natural gas is expected to be operational by the end of next year. This shift is anticipated to lower emissions by approximately 47,292 tonnes of CO2 annually. The company is taking steps to minimise its environmental impact through cleaner energy solutions.
Vedanta’s commitment to net zero emissions by 2050 will be supported by using more renewable energy and afforestation efforts to create carbon sinks. Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non-executive Director at Vedanta, emphasised that this partnership with GAIL Gas Ltd aligns with their strategy for cleaner energy.
GAIL Gas Ltd, a subsidiary of GAIL (India), will set up a 7.5-km pipeline to deliver around 32,000 standard cubic meters of natural gas per day. The supply will start after the pipeline is operational, with a 5-year contract in place. This agreement will support Vedanta’s clean energy transition and improve its production capabilities.
In FY24, Vedanta Aluminium produced 2.37 million tonnes of aluminium. The shift to natural gas is part of its efforts to meet India’s rising demand for aluminium in key sectors while reducing carbon emissions.
