The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has introduced a new digital gateway for railway services in India through its latest app, Swarail. Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), Swarail is positioned as a comprehensive solution that unifies multiple services offered by IRCTC. With its intuitive design and multi-featured interface, it marks a significant improvement over the earlier IRCTC Rail Connect app.
The app is now available for download on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Despite being in beta mode, users can log in using existing credentials from the IRCTC Rail Connect app or register afresh.
Swarail streamlines railway-related tasks by merging various services into one seamless experience. Users can book reserved, unreserved, and platform tickets directly through the app. The ticket booking interface is simple – input your source and destination stations, select the travel date and class, and hit search to view available trains.
This new setup removes the need to stand in queues or switch between multiple platforms. The ease of access benefits regular commuters as well as occasional travellers.
Where older railway apps were known for being slow and cluttered, Swarail features a clean and modern interface. It supports biometric login methods like Face ID on iPhones and fingerprint scanning on Android devices, mirroring the convenience of digital banking apps.
From the home screen, users can:
All these features are neatly arranged and just a tap away, improving the overall user experience significantly.
Frequent travellers will find the 'My Bookings' section particularly useful. It consolidates all your upcoming and past bookings in one place, allowing quick access and hassle-free management. This eliminates the need to search through emails or multiple apps to track your travel history.
Beyond passenger services, Swarail also caters to logistics users. The app includes an option to manage large shipments. While not activated by default, this feature can be turned on through the 'Menu' tab by selecting ‘Show/Hide Services’ and enabling ‘Large Shipment Services’.
Once enabled, users will see new options such as:
This functionality proves to be a valuable addition for individuals or businesses looking to transport goods across India via the railway network.
Swarail represents a major step forward in digitising and simplifying access to Indian Railways services. By combining multiple functions into one unified app, IRCTC has made it easier for passengers and freight users to manage their travel and transport needs. With a modern interface and rich feature set, Swarail is setting new standards for railway apps in India.
