Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), the country’s largest steelmaking Maharatna PSU, has become the single largest steel supplier to the ambitious Zojila Tunnel project, set to be India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel.

SAIL has supplied over 31,000 tonnes of steel, including TMT Re-bars, Structurals, and Plates, making it a critical partner in this national infrastructure milestone. The company’s consistent delivery of steel as the tunnel progresses towards its 2027 completion highlights SAIL’s reputation as a trusted contributor to mega projects.

Strategic Role in a Challenging Terrain

The Zojila Tunnel, strategically located at 11,578 feet in the Himalayan region, spans over 30 kilometers. It will offer vital all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh via Dras and Kargil, significantly improving mobility for civilians and the armed forces along the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway. The tunnel is expected to enhance regional integration and ensure faster, uninterrupted access even during harsh winters.

Nation-Building Legacy

This landmark project adds to SAIL’s extensive track record of contributing to iconic national infrastructure, including the Chenab Railway Bridge, Atal Tunnel, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Dhola Sadiya Bridge, and Bogibeel Bridge. SAIL’s role reflects not only its manufacturing strength but also its commitment to advancing India’s economic growth by enabling large-scale connectivity projects.
