Ola Electric has been directed by the Bangalore Urban Consumer Court to compensate a customer ₹20,000 for unfairly charging for scooter repairs during the warranty period. The forum held the company's action as an unfair trade practice and highlighted the importance of honouring warranty terms.
A Bengaluru customer, who purchased an Ola S1X in June 2024 with a 3-year warranty, faced significant issues such as a bent rear wheel rim, air leakage, and faulty front brakes. Despite the scooter being within its warranty, the customer was charged ₹1,635 for repairs on March 13, 2025. The consumer filed a complaint after Ola Electric ignored a legal notice and failed to appear before the court.
The Bangalore Urban District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission found Ola Electric guilty of engaging in an unfair trade practice. The Commission ordered the company to refund ₹1,635 along with 6% annual interest, increasing to 8% in case of delay beyond 45 days. An additional ₹20,000 was awarded for mental agony, plus ₹5,000 for litigation costs.
The forum criticised Ola for neglecting warranty obligations, stating that “warranty is not just a word.” It expressed strong disapproval over Ola's inaction and warned against repeated lapses, stressing that consumers shouldn't need judicial intervention for minor claims. The court also noted a recurring pattern in complaints about Ola's customer service and warranty handling.

This ruling reinforces the accountability of brands regarding warranty commitments. The court reminded companies that compliance with warranty terms cannot be transferred to consumers or third parties. Such judgments serve as a precedent to protect customer rights and encourage fair corporate conduct.
Ola Electric's penalty and compensation order underscores the importance of lawful adherence to warranty commitments. The case reiterates that unfair trade practices will be met with financial and reputational consequences in consumer protection forums.
