National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC Ltd), India’s largest hydropower company, and Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML Ltd), a Defence PSU, have teamed up to tackle the persistent problem of sedimentation in hydroelectric plants. The two organisations recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly create advanced desilting and dredging solutions. This partnership aims to ease urban waterlogging during monsoons by clearing canals and culverts.
The MoU was exchanged between Uday Shanker Sahi, NHPC’s Executive Director (R&D), and RGK Rao, Head of BEML’s Aerospace Division. Senior officials from both organisations attended the signing.
R.K. Chaudhary, CMD of NHPC, said the partnership will help improve efficiency in power generation while contributing to India’s renewable energy targets. Shantanu Roy, CMD of BEML, echoed this, noting that the solutions will play a role in improving broader infrastructure and water management systems across the country.
The newly developed solutions will first undergo testing through pilot projects. If successful, they will be scaled up and implemented across other hydroelectric plants nationwide, providing results and a better performance in the sector.
NHPC is a Navratna company that handles hydropower projects from start to finish. Meanwhile, BEML, with over six decades of expertise, manufactures earthmoving, mining, and construction equipment and serves sectors like Defence, Rail, and Power.
At around 9:50 AM, BEML’s stock price stands at ₹4,494.00, rising 0.82% today and 58.00% year-to-date, while NHPC’s stock is at ₹85.20, up 0.035% today and 28.80% year-to-date.
Sedimentation can clog reservoirs, reduce water flow, and impact power generation. The collaboration will focus on technologies that address these issues, supporting dredging and desilting operations not just for hydro plants but also in inland waterways, coastal areas, ponds, and lakes.
