India aims at a drone superpower status by bridging capability gaps, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh revealed, emphasising a push for domestic manufacturing early in its introduction. This blog explores how India is transforming its defence procurement and drone strategy for better self‑reliance.

India’s Drive to Become a Drone Superpower

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh highlighted that India aims at a drone superpower status, focusing on closing capability gaps. He noted historic reliance on imports is now reversing through targeted procurement and policy measures. Over recent years, imports dropped dramatically from around 65 % to just 19 % of defence contracts, showcasing how India aims at a drone superpower status by prioritising domestic production.

Bridging Capability Gaps through Procurement

Singh acknowledged that India still faces capability gaps, especially in military‑grade equipment. To bridge these, the government has granted the armed forces emergency procurement powers and is streamlining policies for continuity and efficiency. Over the next two years, targeted procurement efforts will fill critical gaps, reinforcing India’s march towards becoming a drone superpower.

Boosting Domestic Defence Production

India aims at a drone superpower status by scaling its domestic manufacturing base. In the 2024–25 fiscal year, 81 % of ₹2.09 lakh crore worth of defence contracts went to domestic suppliers. These figures reflect India’s ambition to be self‑reliant in drones and other defence systems.

Empowering Private Sector Collaboration

India aims at a drone superpower status through strong public‑private collaboration. With private enterprises now contributing over 20% of defence production, the Defence Secretary stressed the importance of complementing public sector units, backed by supportive programmes like Make‑II and IDDM. These initiatives are lowering barriers for technology investment and innovation.

The Future of India’s Drone Ecosystem

To sustain its ambition to become a drone superpower, India must continue policy continuity and domestic capacity building. Success hinges on marrying procurement reforms with manufacturing growth and advanced private sector innovations.

Conclusion

India’s ambition to become a drone superpower is firmly rooted in strategic reforms, focused procurement, and an emphasis on domestic manufacturing. With a significant reduction in import dependency and a growing role for private industry, the country is actively bridging long-standing capability gaps. As policy stability and indigenous innovation continue to evolve, India’s defence ecosystem is steadily positioning itself as a self-reliant and globally competitive force in drone technology.
