The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has officially refuted recent media claims suggesting that toll fees might be levied on 2-wheelers.
In a fact check posted on June 26, 2025, NHAI confirmed that the Government of India has no such proposal under consideration, and categorically labelled the circulating news as false and misleading.
Several media outlets recently published reports hinting at the introduction of user fees for 2-wheelers on national highways. These reports sparked public concern, particularly among daily commuters and rural travellers who primarily use 2-wheelers. Responding swiftly, NHAI clarified via its official social media handle that such claims are baseless.
NHAI tweeted, “Some sections of the media have reported that the Government of India plans to levy user fees on 2-wheelers. NHAI would like to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration. There are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers.” The tweet was tagged with #FakeNews and #FactCheck, clearly signalling the organisation’s stance.

The clarification has been welcomed by the public, particularly by motorbike users who feared additional commuting costs. As it stands, 2-wheelers are exempt from toll payments on most national highways, and no policy change has been initiated or debated in Parliament or related regulatory bodies.
With this clarification, NHAI reaffirms that there is no plan to impose toll fees on two-wheelers. Citizens are urged to rely on official channels for accurate updates and not be influenced by speculative media reports.
