UAE Becomes India’s Largest LPG Supplier in September as US Shipments Fall 58%

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) became India’s largest supplier of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in September, supplying 547,000 tonnes, according to a MoneyControl news report citing data from maritime intelligence firm Kpler.
Imports rose 182% from 193,000 tonnes in August. The UAE accounted for 39% of India’s LPG imports during the month, compared with 13% in August.
The country replaced the United States, which had held the top position for six consecutive months.
US Imports Drop 58%
LPG shipments from the US fell 58% to 323,000 tonnes in September from the previous month. Its share of India’s imports dropped to 23% from 53% in August, placing it second among suppliers.
The US had become India’s largest LPG supplier after disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz following the US-Iran war in late February affected supplies from Gulf countries.
Kuwait and Qatar Shipments Increase
Kuwait supplied 132,544 tonnes of LPG in September, an increase of 15.6% from August, while imports from Qatar rose 76% to 115,340 tonnes. Kuwait was India’s third-largest supplier, followed by Qatar.
India did not import LPG from Saudi Arabia during the month. Other suppliers included Iran at 89,000 tonnes, Algeria at 24,000 tonnes, Oman and the Republic of the Congo at 23,000 tonnes each, and Brunei at 4,000 tonnes.
Total Imports Fall 4%
India’s LPG imports declined 4% to 1.39 million tonnes in September from the previous month, despite higher shipments from the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar.
India imports around 60% of its LPG requirements, with Gulf countries previously accounting for 90% of its imports through the Strait of Hormuz.
Kpler said crude volumes leaving the Gulf, excluding Iran, along with supplies from Saudi Arabia’s west coast and the UAE’s east coast, had returned to around the pre-conflict level of 18.5 million barrels per day.
Including diverted shipments, volumes were around 100% of that level.
