In a significant push towards indigenous defence production and public-private collaboration, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully developed a new 5.56x45 mm Close Quarter Battle (CQB) carbine. The firearm was designed and produced through a partnership between DRDO and a private-sector firm, reflecting India’s growing emphasis on self-reliance in the defence sector under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Joint Development Marks a Milestone in Defence Innovation

The carbine was developed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune, a DRDO laboratory, in partnership with a private company.

According to an official release, “This weapon fires the in-service 5.56x45 mm ammunition and is equipped with ambidextrous features to facilitate ease of use by both right-handed and left-handed shooters.”

Weapon Tested and Ready for Induction

The CQB carbine underwent rigorous user trials and successfully completed the evaluation by the Indian Army. “This weapon has successfully undergone stringent firing tests by the users and is ready for induction,” the official statement noted. The army has been looking to acquire these carbines for a long time.
