ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS India) has launched a new continuous galvanising line (CGL) at its Hazira facility in Gujarat. This state-of-the-art production line is part of the firm’s expansive ₹60,000 crore investment plan and is capable of manufacturing Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) with tensile strength up to 1180 megapascals (MPa).

The steel produced will cater primarily to the automotive sector, focusing on enhanced safety, durability, and sustainability. With this development, AMNS India has become the first company in the country to manufacture the highest-strength automotive steel domestically.

National Expansion and Indigenous Development

The new unit aligns with the broader objective of increasing the Hazira plant’s capacity from 9 million tonnes (MT) to 15 MT, under an ambitious expansion project inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As per news reports, AMNS India CEO Dilip Oommen said, "We can proudly say that the new line and upcoming facilities are designed to produce steel that matches the quality of offerings currently available in developed nations."

Future Projects and National Footprint

In addition to the Hazira expansion, AMNS India is planning to establish an integrated steel plant in Andhra Pradesh, where land acquisition is currently underway. The company also intends to set up similar integrated facilities in Odisha, enhancing its national presence.

These developments are part of a larger strategy to scale up production capabilities to 24 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), encompassing both upstream and downstream processes. AMNS India operates as a 60:40 joint venture between ArcelorMittal (Luxembourg) and Nippon Steel (Japan), reinforcing its position as a key player in the Indian steel sector.
