History of CG Power & Industrial Solutions Limited
Incorporated in 1937, CG Power & Industrial Solutions Limited is involved in the business of manufacturing electrical equipment, transport equipment and general-purpose and special-purpose machinery and equipment. This is a company from the Murugappa Group.
In 1878, Colonel REB Crompton founded a business in England, REB Crompton & Co., for the manufacturing and contracting of electrical equipment. In 1927, REB Crompton & Co. was merged with F&A Parkinson Limited, forming Crompton Parkinson Limited (CPL) in England. In 1937, CPL set up a subsidiary in Mumbai, India, Crompton Parkinson Works Ltd, along with a sales organisation, Greaves Cotton & Crompton Parkinson Ltd.
In 1947, this Indian subsidiary was taken over by the Thapar Group. In 1960, the company started expanding its portfolio of products and started manufacturing aluminium wound transformers and 400 kV transformers. In 1996, the Thapar Group formed Crompton Greaves Limited to meet the electrical demand of consumer and B2B segments. By 2004, the company had established itself as one of the leading Indian companies in the electrical engineering sector. In 2005, they expanded to other regions, such as Belgium, the USA, Ireland, and Indonesia.
In 2015, the company’s heavy engineering business was demerged, forming CG Power and Industrial Solutions Limited. In 2020, Tube Investments of India Limited (TII) of the Murugappa Group company acquired a controlling stake in CG Power and Industrial Solutions Ltd.
As of March 2023, CG Power & Industrial Solutions Limited had 17 manufacturing units. They supply their products all over the country and over 50 countries worldwide across the Americas, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa.
Business Segments of CG Power & Industrial Solutions Limited
There are three business segments of the company, as follows:
- Industrial: In this segment, the company is involved in the business of power conversion equipment that includes a wide spectrum of medium- and low-voltage rotating machines, such as generators, motors and alternators, stampings, and drives.
- Power: In this segment, the company manufactures a comprehensive range of power and distribution transformers, switchgear, Extra High Voltage (EHV) circuit breakers, Medium Voltage (MV) circuit breakers, EHV instrument transformers, isolators, lightning arrestors and vacuum interrupters.
- Railways: Under this segment, the company provides solutions to Indian Railways in rolling stock and signalling equipment with a wide range of products.
As of March 31, 2023, there are 3 Indian and 18 foreign subsidiaries of CG Power & Industrial Solutions Limited, and a few of them are as follows:
- CG Adhesive Products Limited (CGAPL): This subsidiary of the company manufactures and deals in speciality adhesive tapes and labels. CG Power & Industrial Solutions Limited holds a stake of 82.76% in CGAPL.
- CG International B.V.: This wholly-owned subsidiary of the company is into designing, manufacturing, and marketing electrical products.
- CG Power Equipments Limited: This wholly-owned subsidiary of the company is involved in the power and distribution transformer manufacturer.
