The Maharashtra government has undertaken one of its largest welfare‑scheme clean‑ups by removing 90 lakh women from the beneficiary list of the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana. According to reports, the beneficiary pool has dropped sharply from more than 2.6 crore applicants to 1.53 crore following a detailed audit.
The sudden reduction has left several families concerned as many depended on the monthly financial assistance offered by the scheme. Most exclusions are concentrated in districts such as Beed, where a large number of applicants were declared ineligible after verification checks.
The government conducted an extensive digital verification exercise before finalising the revised beneficiary list. During this process, 2.83 lakh names from Beed district alone were removed after cross-checks with tax and vehicle databases.
The system flagged applicants whose annual income exceeded ₹2.5 lakh or who owned a four-wheeler. It also detected more than 12,000 men who had incorrectly registered for the women-only scheme.
Officials have stated that the exclusions were aimed at “right‑sizing” the beneficiary base to ensure that only eligible women continue receiving support. The government indicated that the audit helped reduce over ₹17,000 crore in planned expenditure.
It also emphasised that the removal of ghost beneficiaries was essential for the financial sustainability of the programme. These steps, the administration noted, would help ensure that state funds are directed towards genuinely eligible households. The authorities described the exercise as a necessary step to strengthen the integrity of welfare systems.
As the revised status of many beneficiaries now shows “ineligible” instead of “approved,” local administrative units are witnessing a surge in complaints. Ward offices and Gram Panchayats have seen long queues of women seeking clarification about their removal.
Many were unaware of the exact reason for rejection until checking the remarks section online. Applicants have been asked to verify whether the issue relates to income details, document mismatch, or incomplete e‑KYC.
Women who have been removed from the list must complete corrective steps before March 31 to regain eligibility. The reinstatement process requires them to log in at ladakibahin.maharashtra.gov.in and check the “remarks” column to see the reason for exclusion.
If the issue stems from a technical or documentation error, they can use the “edit” option to re‑upload Aadhaar, ration card, or bank passbook details. Those facing “unexpected errors” must file a physical appeal at the nearest Setu Suvidha Kendra or with the local Anganwadi Sevika.

The removal of 90 lakh beneficiaries from the Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana marks a substantial administrative overhaul driven by digital verification. The government’s audit has significantly altered the scheme’s beneficiary landscape, cutting both genuine and erroneous entries.
Many women now face additional steps to regain eligibility through mandatory e‑KYC and document correction protocols. The development has also led to widespread grievances at local centres as affected households seek clarity on their status.
