The government has announced that households must switch from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to piped natural gas (PNG) by the specified deadline or face a cease in LPG supply.

This measure is aimed at addressing LPG shortages due to ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting global supply chains.

Deadline for Switching to PNG

Households are required to obtain a PNG connection within 3 months from the date of notification. Failure to comply will result in the cessation of LPG supply.

The government is pushing for this switch to ensure energy security amidst current supply challenges.

Areas Without PNG Availability

If PNG connection is not feasible in certain areas, households must obtain a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the authorised entity.

This NOC ensures uninterrupted LPG supply until PNG becomes viable. Such measures aim to streamline processes and manage resources efficiently.

Rationale Behind the Government's Push

The initiative comes in response to the decreased availability of LPG due to damage and disruption in Gulf liquefaction facilities and blockages in the Strait of Hormuz. The government's strategy is to channel LPG supplies to areas lacking pipeline infrastructure.

Government Efforts to Expand Pipeline Network

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has notified the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026, to hasten pipeline infrastructure development. This includes standardised charges and expedited permissions to facilitate rapid rollout across the nation.

Key Points Consumers Should Know

The order mandates timely approvals from public authorities for pipeline connectivity with specified charges. In housing areas, permissions must be granted within 3 working days, and last-mile PNG connection is to be provided within 48 hours. Failure to grant necessary permissions will result in cessation of LPG supply after due notice.

Conclusion

The directive to switch from LPG to PNG is a crucial step in coping with supply shortages and promoting energy security. The government's arrangements for areas without PNG access and efforts to expand pipeline networks are key measures designed to ensure smooth implementation of this transition.
