The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM), launched in 2019, aimed to promote solar energy use among farmers. The initiative sought to boost solar capacity addition and reduce farmers’ dependence on grid electricity and diesel.
The government is likely to extend the PM-KUSUM deadline again, as key components have failed to meet even 50% of their targets. “The deadline for the implementation of PM KUSUM is likely to be extended further to ensure the envisaged targets are achieved,” an official source stated.
Initially set to add 30,800 MW of solar capacity by 2022 with central financial support of ₹34,422 crore, the scheme’s deadline was earlier pushed to March 2026 and its target revised to 34,800 MW. As per the data, none of the components have achieved full completion so far.
Component B has met 71% of its target as of September 9, while Component A achieved only 6.5%, and Component C (IPS and FLS) stand at 16.5% and 25.5%, respectively.
According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Component A involves the installation of 10,000 MW of small solar power plants, Component B covers 14 lakh off-grid standalone solar-powered agriculture pumps, and Component C focuses on solarising 35 lakh grid-connected agriculture pumps.
Under Component A, only 650.49 MW capacity has been installed, with states like Telangana, Tripura, Odisha, Gujarat, and Assam reporting nil progress. Uttar Pradesh (1 MW), Tamil Nadu (3 MW), Maharashtra and Goa (4 MW), and Chhattisgarh (7 MW) also showed minimal achievement.
In Component B, 12.72 lakh solar pumps have been sanctioned, of which 9.03 lakh have been installed, while Andaman and Nicobar, Puducherry, and Telangana reported no installations as of September 2025.

Despite earlier extensions and revised goals, PM-KUSUM continues to face slow implementation. Low installation rates in several states highlight logistical and execution challenges. A further extension could provide the necessary time for states to accelerate progress and help achieve India’s renewable energy and agricultural sustainability goals.
