LIC has invested nearly ₹50,000 crore in 7 companies linked to the Adani Group. This includes names like Adani Enterprises LtdAdani Total Gas LtdAdani Green Energy LtdAdani Energy Solutions LtdAPSEZAmbuja Cements Ltd, and ACC Ltd. Its debt investment in APSEZ ranks as LIC’s fifth-largest debt exposure in the private sector.

The government has stated that it does not issue any directions or advisories to LIC regarding investments. All investments are carried out after thorough due diligence, risk assessment, and fiduciary compliance by LIC itself.

Who Checks LIC’s Investment Functions Periodically? 

The government highlighted that LIC’s investment functions are regularly audited and reviewed. Periodic inspections are also conducted by IRDAI, ensuring transparency and compliance with regulations.

LIC follows the Insurance Act, 1938, and regulations issued by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

Earlier reports suggested that LIC’s investments in Adani Group bonds and equity were coordinated with the finance ministry and other government bodies. The ministry, however, reaffirmed that LIC follows its own procedures and policies when making investment decisions.

How Much Does LIC Invest in Other Top Companies in India?

LIC primarily invests in the top 500 listed companies on NSE and BSE. Equity holdings in Nifty 50 companies alone stood at ₹4,30,776.97 crore as of 30 September 2025. This constituted nearly 45.85% of LIC’s total equity investments.
