Jindal Stainless has developed a stainless-steel container for transporting salt in partnership with Indian Railways. The prototype underwent loading and unloading trials at Bhimasar in Gandhidham, Gujarat, on 10 February 2026.
The filing shows that the container has been designed specifically for bulk salt movement, where corrosion has been a recurring issue in conventional equipment.
The 20-foot container is built entirely from stainless steel. The body uses 304 grade steel, which is suited to chloride-rich environments. External stiffeners and the underframe use JT Grade (N7 as per BIS 6911), which is for strength and weight balance.
Each container has a tare weight of about 3 metric tonnes and a payload capacity of 33 metric tonnes. A rake of 48 wagons carrying 96 containers can move around 3,300 metric tonnes of salt in 1 trip.
The same volume would typically require close to 100 road trailers, according to company estimates.
Salt transport is prone to corrosion, especially in coastal conditions. The stainless steel containers are expected to last 15 to 20 years, compared with much shorter lifespans for conventional units.
The design removes the need for tarpaulin covers, which helps reduce contamination and wastage. It also supports mechanised loading and unloading.
The prototype was fabricated by Kalyani Cast Tech Private Ltd. and developed in line with specifications set by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation in Lucknow.

As of February 13, 2026, 3:30 pm, Jindal Stainless share price closed at ₹766.80, down 4.10% from the previous closing price.
The trial introduces a rail container for reducing corrosion-related losses in salt transport. Further steps will depend on operational results and adoption by the rail freight network.
