Food delivery companies Swiggy, Zomato and Magicpin recorded a strong rise in orders on New Year’s Eve, according to PTI reports.
The increase came on a day typically marked by peak food consumption across cities. The companies said the higher volumes were handled without disruption to services.
The surge in orders coincided with a strike called by the Gig & Platform Service Workers Union (GIPSWU), which is seeking improved payouts and working conditions.
The union said over 1 lakh workers from 22 cities participated in the action, including about 14,000 members from cities such as Delhi and Mumbai.
India’s overall gig workforce is estimated at over 12.7 million workers. Government think tank NITI Aayog has projected the number to rise to 23.5 million by 2029-30.
Against this backdrop, companies said the strike had a limited impact on their delivery capacity on New Year’s Eve.
In a post on X, Eternal founder Deepinder Goyal said Zomato and Blinkit together delivered more than 75 lakh orders to over 63 lakh customers during the day. Around 4.5 lakh delivery partners were active across both platforms. He said local authorities assisted in maintaining order during operations.
Magicpin founder and CEO Anshoo Sharma said the platform saw no operational impact from the strike. The company said lakhs of orders were placed every hour across metro cities.
Swiggy said dining out was also common on New Year’s Eve. Bengaluru and Hyderabad led bookings on Swiggy Dineout. Ahmedabad recorded 1.6 times growth in bookings, followed by Lucknow at 1.3 times and Jaipur at 1.2 times.
Magicpin data showed dinner orders peaking around 9:30 pm. Butter chicken was the most ordered main course in the Delhi-NCR region, followed by biryani and dal makhni. On Swiggy, biryani crossed 2.19 lakh orders before 7:30 pm. By 8:30 pm, pizza and burger orders were nearly equal, both crossing 2.16 lakh.
