The Indian automobile industry has witnessed a notable surge in passenger vehicle dispatches this April.

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), companies dispatched 4,37,312 units to dealers, marking a significant 25.4% increase year-on-year (YoY), highlighting a robust start to the fiscal year.

Significant Growth in Vehicle Dispatches

Data from SIAM indicates that this increase has been driven largely by a rise in utility vehicle and passenger car demand.

The dispatches of passenger vehicles in April 2025 were recorded at 3,48,847 units. In April 2026, utility vehicles registered a growth of 21.5%, reaching 2,44,280 units compared to 2,01,062 units the previous year.

Passenger car dispatches also saw a significant uptick, with a 32.7% increase to 1,20,945 units.

The demand momentum observed at the end of FY 2025-26 has continued into the new fiscal year, despite global concerns like high commodity prices due to the ongoing West Asia conflict.

Expansion in the Two-Wheeler and Three-Wheeler Segments

Two-wheeler sales have also mirrored this growth trend, surging by 28.4% to 18,72,691 units.

Motorcycle sales specifically saw an increase of 30.6% to 11,38,452 units, while scooter sales went up by 26.2% totalling 6,91,993 units.

Three-wheeler dispatches rose by 32.8%, reaching 65,668 units compared to last year's figure of 49,441 units, showcasing a broad-based demand across vehicle segments.

Overall Vehicle Wholesales Exhibit Strong Performance

The comprehensive vehicle wholesales across categories grew by 27.9%, culminating in 23,16,671 units compared to 18,11,876 units during the corresponding month last year.

These figures underscore the strong demand for automobiles across a wide range of vehicle categories.

As per PTI news report, Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, noted that the continuation of the demand witnessed in the latter half of FY 2025-26 has carried forward into this fiscal period, reflecting robust consumer interest despite external concerns.

Conclusion

The Indian automobile sector has kicked off FY 2026-27 on a strong note with a significant rise in passenger vehicle dispatches. Despite facing global economic challenges, the industry shows resilience, supported by increased consumer demand for utility vehicles, passenger cars, and two-wheelers.
