Apple's manufacturing strategy has undergone a major shift, as CEO Tim Cook confirmed that a significant share of iPhones sold in the US are now produced in India. This move marks a crucial milestone in Apple’s growing dependency on India not only as a market but also as a production powerhouse. Meanwhile, Vietnam has become central to making other Apple products like iPads and MacBooks.
During the June quarter, Apple revealed that most iPhones sold in the US were manufactured in India. This reflects the tech giant's strategic production diversification amidst rising trade tensions. While India caters to the US market, China continues to serve other international markets with iPhone supply. This operational model underscores Apple’s shift away from traditional manufacturing bases such as China.
As India takes charge of iPhone manufacturing, Vietnam has ramped up as the main production centre for Apple’s other devices aimed at global markets. This includes MacBooks, iPads, and Apple Watches. By spreading its supply chain across multiple countries, Apple is mitigating geopolitical and tariff-related risks, particularly in light of trade policies evolving from the US and other regions.

Former President Donald Trump's disapproval of Apple expanding production in India has sparked concern in the industry. He announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports, though electronics like smartphones and computers are currently exempt. However, Apple incurred tariff-related costs exceeding $800 million in Q2, with an estimated increase to $1.1 billion in Q3 if global trade policies remain unchanged.
Aside from its role as a manufacturing base, India is emerging as a crucial consumer market for Apple. The company recorded double-digit iPhone sales growth across emerging markets, with India leading the charge. Apple reported global quarterly revenue of $94 billion, and India was among more than 24 countries that delivered record returns during the June quarter.
Apple’s move to manufacture the majority of US-bound iPhones in India signals a landmark transition in its supply chain strategy. While Vietnam strengthens its position for non-iPhone production, Apple’s dual focus on India as both a production and revenue hub shows how the tech giant is adapting to a changing global trade landscape.
