The Central Government is preparing to introduce a ‘Made in India’ branding scheme to create a common identity for Indian products in global markets, as per news reports.

The initiative is being led by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and is expected to be rolled out after consultations with different industries.

DPIIT Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia said, “The Made in India brand scheme has been in the can for quite a long time, and it is finally getting launched. We have had a pilot run with the steel sector, and it has been quite encouraging.

We will be having greater discussions with the industry as to which are the sectors we can roll out, but the framework is ready”.

Pilot in Steel Sector

Speaking at the annual summit of Confederation of Indian Industry, Bhatia said discussions with industry representatives would help identify sectors that can be brought under the branding exercise.

He added that the government has also identified products that are either not manufactured in India or are produced in insufficient quantities. These include components used in automobile and motorcycle manufacturing where technology gaps continue to exist.

According to officials, the Centre is also focusing on increasing production of intermediate goods and helping MSMEs expand capacity.

Industrial and Trade Policy

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said industrial policy and trade policy need to support each other if India wants to strengthen its role in global value chains.

He said sectors identified under trade agreements should receive policy support domestically so that manufacturing capacity and investments can grow together. Agrawal also said uncertainty around tariffs has affected long-term investment planning for industries.

According to him, companies face difficulties becoming part of global supply chains when tariff structures remain unpredictable across markets.

Imports and FTAs

Agrawal said India’s free trade agreements signed over the last 6 years have included areas beyond tariffs, such as services and regulatory harmonisation.

He noted that imports have grown faster than exports partly because of lower tariffs and higher domestic demand. Export growth, however, has remained slower due to regulatory issues and limited expansion in services trade.

The remarks came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for reducing the use of imported products amid disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict.

Conclusion

The government is expected to hold further consultations with industries before rolling out the ‘Made in India’ branding scheme across identified sectors.
