The Government of India has expanded the number of authorised agencies permitted to carry out coal and lignite exploration by adding 18 private entities. This increase is intended to accelerate mining operations and support growing energy demand across the country.

More Private Agencies Join Exploration Operations

As of November 28, 2025, a total of 45 agencies are now authorised to carry out exploration of coal and lignite resources, up from the previous 27. The inclusion of 18 new private-sector agencies aims to decrease the waiting period for mining operators by nearly 6 months due to quicker geological surveys and reporting.

These newly inducted agencies have been accredited by the Quality Council of India - National Accreditation Board for Education and Training. Being notified as Accredited Prospecting Agencies (APAs), they can conduct prospecting operations critical for coal block assessment prior to operationalisation.

Improved Flexibility and Efficiency in Mineral Exploration

The addition of more authorised bodies will allow coal block allottees enhanced flexibility and choice when engaging agencies for their prospecting needs. This move is expected to foster greater competition, improve efficiency, and encourage the adoption of technological innovations in the sector.

Expediting the exploration process supports not only faster commencement of mining but also ensures meeting the growing coal and lignite needs of various industries, thereby strengthening the national energy infrastructure.

Strategic Move for Energy Security

The Central Government’s step to involve more private stakeholders aligns with its broader aim of securing energy resources for India. Increasing availability of coal and lignite through quicker exploration and operationalisation plays a significant role in supporting industrial growth and power generation across regions.

Conclusion

By authorising 18 additional private agencies for coal and lignite exploration, the government seeks to enhance efficiency, reduce delays, and ensure a steady supply of vital energy resources. This policy shift supports broader energy goals and aligns with India’s developmental priorities.
