Apple’s manufacturing shift to India reached a major milestone in 2025 as exports of iPhones from the country crossed the ₹2 trillion mark for the first time since production began in 2021, as per news reports.
The sharp rise reflects the success of the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme and Apple’s evolving supply-chain strategy.
India-made iPhone exports during January-December 2025 touched $23 billion, or about ₹2.03 trillion, marking an 85% jump from the previous year.
Apple’s export base has expanded rapidly over a short period from ₹8,800 crore in 2021 to ₹36,234 crore in 2022, more than doubling to ₹74,000 crore in 2023 and crossing ₹1.1 trillion in 2024 before reaching the current record level.
Until 2024, the company’s India operations were largely focused on export-led growth under the PLI framework.
Apple initially entered India through global contract manufacturers such as Wistron and Foxconn. However, from 2023, the company began actively integrating Indian firms into its supplier ecosystem as part of a broader localisation strategy.
Tata Group’s takeover of Wistron’s Karnataka plant and its subsequent acquisition of a major stake in Pegatron’s Tamil Nadu facility marked a turning point. Since 2024, a growing list of Indian suppliers including Motherson, Hindalco, Wipro Pari, Jabil, Aequs, SFO Technologies and Bharat Forge have joined Apple’s component and sub-assembly network across eight states.
Local value addition in smartphone manufacturing has climbed to around 19%, almost half of China’s long-term level, achieved in just four years. The recently introduced Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme is expected to push this figure closer to 30% over the next four years.
With several Apple vendors participating in the scheme, India is now positioned not only as a major iPhone export hub but also as a rising exporter of electronic components.

Apple’s ₹2 trillion export milestone highlights how India has moved from a marginal manufacturing base to a critical node in the global iPhone supply chain, with deeper localisation set to drive the next phase of growth.
