NHPC Ltd has embarked on a significant multi-year investment programme aimed at strengthening India’s clean energy portfolio.

With projects spanning hydropower and solar, the company is moving to expand generation capacity while supporting regional development across the Northeast and the Himalayan belt.

Hydropower Expansion Gathers Momentum

As per power minister Manohar Lal, NHPC and its subsidiaries are progressing with 8 major hydropower projects, together accounting for 8,514 MW of upcoming capacity.

Key initiatives include the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower project targeted for commissioning in December 2026, the 2,800 MW Dibang Multipurpose project slated for 2032, and the 500 MW Teesta-VI project, expected to come online in 2029.

A considerable portion of the ₹98,107 crore investment is concentrated in these large-scale schemes, with ₹68,273 crore allocated to the 3 flagship projects.

An additional ₹29,834 crore will support 6 other developments across Sikkim and Jammu & Kashmir, regions that form an important part of NHPC’s expansion footprint.

Solar Capacity And Long-term Investment Plans

Beyond hydropower, NHPC is diversifying its clean energy mix by constructing 6 solar power projects totalling 1,190 MW, while another 145 MW across three planned projects awaits approval.

The company is also working toward a ₹13,052 crore capital expenditure target for the financial year ending March 2026, reflecting sustained investment appetite across its portfolio.

Currently, NHPC operates 23 hydropower stations with a combined 7,771 MW capacity, generating 25,194 million units of electricity in FY 2024–25, underscoring its position as a key contributor to India’s renewable energy system.
