The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), the largest hospitality company in India, has achieved a significant milestone by securing trademark registration for the Taj sonic sound.
This sound mark is associated with the iconic Taj brand, representing a pivotal development in brand protection within the Indian hospitality sector.
The registration of the Taj sonic sound as a trademark legally safeguards the brand's distinctive sonic identity, acknowledging sound as a crucial brand asset. In a marketplace increasingly driven by experiences, sonic branding plays a vital role in shaping emotional memory and enhancing consumer recall beyond visual cues.
As hospitality brands expand into immersive, multi-sensory experiences, sound has emerged as a critical touchpoint for building trust, familiarity, and emotional resonance.
Prior to this, Taj successfully secured trademark protection for the 3-dimensional shape of the Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay. This move underscores a long-standing commitment to protecting distinctive elements of its heritage through progressive intellectual property strategies.
IHCL was represented by Fidus Law Chambers, with Managing Partner Ms. Shwetasree Majumder leading the effort, assisted by Partner Astha Negi and Senior Associate Umang Gola.
This strategic move reflects IHCL's forward-looking approach to intellectual property, aligning with evolving guest engagement and brand connection methods.

The company is listed on the BSE and NSE and is India's largest hospitality company by market capitalisation.
As of January 13, 2026, at 9:22 AM, The Indian Hotels share price on NSE was trading at ₹691.35 up by 0.18% from the previous closing price.
IHCL's achievement in securing India's first sound mark registration in hospitality for the Taj brand highlights its commitment to innovative brand protection strategies. This development underscores the importance of sonic branding in enhancing consumer engagement and brand recall.
