Coal India Limited is simultaneously advancing on 2 strategic fronts, securing large-scale energy storage projects and institutionalising partnerships through a newly incorporated joint venture, signalling a structured shift towards diversified energy operations.
The company has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from Telangana Power Generation Corporation Limited for developing a 750 MWh battery energy storage system at Choutuppal.
This translates into a capacity of 187.5 MW with a 4-hour discharge duration, carrying an estimated project cost of ₹1,057.09 crore.
The project will be executed within 18 months from the signing of the Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA), with a fixed tariff of ₹3.14 lakh per MW per month, providing long-term revenue visibility.
In a parallel development, Coal India has formally incorporated a joint venture entity with Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), named DVC CIL Power Private Limited, marking a key milestone in its collaborative energy strategy.
The JV has been incorporated in India and has received its Corporate Identification Number (CIN), indicating regulatory completion of the formation process. The ownership structure is equally split, with both Coal India and DVC holding 50% stake each.
The venture has been structured with an initial equity base comprising 50,000 shares of ₹10 each, while the broader project financing model includes a 30% equity infusion (amounting to ₹3,132.96 crore) and 70% debt component, reflecting a capital-efficient execution framework.
