Bharti Airtel is awaiting a response from the Department of Telecommunications regarding its request for parity and clarification on adjusted gross revenue dues, according to Executive Vice Chairman Gopal Vittal. 

Airtel seeks clarity on AGR dues treatment 

Gopal Vittal stated that Bharti Airtel has written multiple letters to the Department of Telecommunications seeking clarification and equal treatment in the handling of its AGR liabilities.  

The company has requested consistency in the application of rules and assessment methods related to AGR dues and is awaiting a formal response from the department. 

Focus on computation and assessment issues 

The company has highlighted areas that require correction, including arithmetical mistakes and errors of commission and omission in the computation of AGR dues.  

These representations have been submitted with reference to parity in treatment and alignment with existing judicial rulings. 

AGR liability position as per disclosures 

As per Bharti Airtel’s FY25 annual report, the company’s deferred payment liability towards AGR stood at ₹38,604 crore. The company has indicated that any further action on the matter will be determined after receiving clarity from the Department of Telecommunications. 

Context of recent sector developments 

The comments come in the context of recent government decisions related to AGR dues in the telecom sector.  

The Union Cabinet approved a staggered repayment structure for Vodafone Idea, freezing its AGR dues at ₹87,695 crore as of December 31, 2025. The Department of Telecommunications has also initiated reassessment of AGR dues for certain periods following judicial permissions.
