In a notable turn for FY25, the Nadar family has become the leading promoter in terms of dividend income, taking the top spot by earning ₹9,906 crore from HCL Technologies. This places them ahead of prominent names like Azim Premji of Wipro and Anil Agarwal of Vedanta.

HCL Tech Dividend Drives ₹9,906 Crore for Nadar Family

As per the Business Standard report, the Nadar family's income from HCL Technologies surged to ₹9,906 crore in FY25, a significant rise from ₹8,585 crore in FY24. Holding 60.82% in the IT services firm, the family benefited from HCL’s total dividend payout of ₹16,290 crore. This income made the Nadars the top dividend earners among listed company promoters for the fiscal year.

Wipro's Azim Premji Slips Due to Reduced Dividend

Azim Premji’s family, which holds around 72.7% in Wipro, received ₹4,570 crore in FY25, which is nearly half of the ₹9,128 crore generated in FY24. The drop is largely because Wipro did not conduct a buyback in FY25, in contrast to FY24 when it executed a ₹12,000 crore buyback that added significantly to promoter income.

Calculation Criteria and Exclusions in Dividend Ranking

This dividend income ranking is based on distributions received by individual promoters and their directly owned unlisted holding firms from listed Indian entities. It explicitly excludes government entities, Tata Group firms, and companies owned by financial institutions such as HDFC BankL&T, and ICICI Bank. Multinational subsidiaries are also excluded.

No Dividend from HCL Enterprises Adds Emphasis on HCL Tech

The Nadar family's other listed venture, HCL Enterprises, did not declare any equity dividend for either FY24 or FY25. This further highlights the significance of HCL Technologies as the sole dividend-generating entity for the promoter group during the financial year.

Conclusion

The rise in HCL Tech's dividend payout has placed the Nadar family at the top of the promoter income list for FY25. With ₹9,906 crore in earnings, they not only surpassed past figures but also outpaced other renowned promoter groups, reflecting changing dynamics in Indian corporate dividend trends.
