Mutual fund investor participation continued to expand in January even as equity markets remained volatile, with a majority of leading asset management companies recording growth in folio counts, according to the latest industry data.
Data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) show that 41 out of the top 50 fund houses registered an increase in folios during the month. Total folios rose by 7.1 million, moving up from 263.5 million to 270.6 million.
Among the biggest contributors, Tata Mutual Fund, Nippon India Mutual Fund and HDFC Mutual Fund each added more than one million folios. ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund and SBI Mutual Fund also reported strong additions of about 845,000 and 427,000 folios, respectively.
A smaller set of fund houses saw folio declines, including Quant Mutual Fund, Canara Robeco Mutual Fund, Navi Mutual Fund, JM Financial Mutual Fund, PGIM India Mutual Fund, Samco Mutual Fund, HSBC Mutual Fund, Baroda BNP Paribas Mutual Fund and Choice Mutual Fund.
Saugata Chatterjee, president and chief business officer, Nippon India Mutual Fund, said the folio expansion reflects wider investor participation and a shift towards disciplined, long-term investing habits.
He attributed the trend to rising SIP adoption, stronger investor awareness and continued education initiatives, along with distributor support in guiding investors through volatile phases.
Nippon India Mutual Fund’s gold fund also saw elevated inflows of $911.7 million in January, supporting investor additions.

The steady rise in folios indicates continued domestic investor engagement through mutual funds, even amid equity market pressure and foreign fund outflows.
