Rolls-Royce Plans MRO Facility in India for Indian Air Force Engines

Rolls-Royce is considering setting up a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility in India for the AE2100 engines used by the Indian Air Force, as per news reports. The proposal comes as part of the company’s plans to strengthen its aerospace and defence presence in India.
Aligned with the India-UK Trade Agreement
The MRO plans are being explored in the context of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which aims to promote industrial and economic collaboration between the two countries. Rolls-Royce has indicated that this agreement provides a framework for deeper engagement.
Support for Transport Aircraft Fleet
The AE2100 engine powers the Indian Air Force's transport fleet, and the potential MRO facility would support and sustain this segment. Rolls-Royce is also looking at opportunities to scale its involvement in the Multi-Role Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme.
The company recently announced that it intends to double its sourcing from India over the next 5 years. This includes expanding its supplier base for complex engine parts and other components across its various business verticals.
Focus on Local Capabilities
As part of its long-term plans, Rolls-Royce is aiming to localise more of its global technical expertise in India. The company is also working with Indian suppliers and engineering talent to meet operational and manufacturing needs within the country.
Rolls-Royce has joint ventures with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Force Motors. It also works with Tata, Bharat Forge, Godrej & Boyce, and other Indian companies for manufacturing and component production.
