As per news reports, chipmaker Qualcomm Technologies is moving to localise automotive module production in India, shifting manufacturing from traditional hubs in Taiwan, China and Korea.
As per PTI reports, Group General Manager for automotive, industrial and embedded IoT, Nakul Duggal, said the company is committed to building supply chains that directly serve Indian automotive needs while strengthening its Tier 1 ecosystem as it expands its own manufacturing in the country.
As per news reports, Nakul Duggal is stated group general manager for automotive, industrial and embedded IoT. "We build a lot of modules. Those modules are typically built in Taiwan, China, or Korea, but we are now actively working in India to localise this. We, of course, partner with our Tier 1 ecosystem, such that as they move their manufacturing to India, we have been supporting them.”
Qualcomm operates as a fabless company with approximately 22,000 employees, about 60% of its workforce based in India, and maintains a local team dedicated to assisting domestic carmakers.
Qualcomm has partnered with Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai to supply chipsets for telematics, infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Its Snapdragon Elite platform powers these features, while the Snapdragon Cockpit Elite and Snapdragon Ride Elite SoCs, announced in October 2024 and shipped to customers in early 2025, are slated to be in around a dozen vehicles by 2026.
The automotive business currently makes up about 10% of Qualcomm’s global revenue ($3.6–$3.8 billion), with a target to double this figure to $8 billion by 2029, as per news reports.
