As per The PTI report, from April 20, airlines will be required to offer 60% of seats on flights without any additional charges, according to new directives issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This initiative aims to promote fair access to air travel for passengers.
The DGCA has mandated that airlines allocate at least 60% of seats on flights without additional charges. This follows the civil aviation ministry's directive as part of efforts to ensure equitable access to air travel. Previously, only 20% of seats could be booked without an additional fee.
Under the new guidelines, airlines are expected to maintain transparent seat allocation policies and clearly communicate the availability of free seats on their booking platforms. These changes are geared towards enhancing fairness in air travel.
The revised regulations also specify that passengers on the same booking should be seated together where practicable, often meaning adjacent seats in the same row.
Airlines are preparing to implement these directives and ensure compliance by April 20.

While the move aims to benefit passengers, IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet have raised concerns regarding the financial implications. These airlines argue that without additional charges for 60% of seats, there could be a need to increase airfares to compensate for potential revenue losses.
The Federation of Indian Airlines has urged the civil aviation ministry to reconsider this decision, emphasizing potential economic impacts on the airline industry.
In addition to seat allocation, the DGCA's circular requires that all charges related to optional services, such as for sports equipment or musical instruments, be displayed transparently on booking platforms.
This requirement comes amid concerns that airlines are imposing high fees for various services, including seat selection. The DGCA aims to ensure that passengers have clear and unambiguous information regarding any additional costs.
The new DGCA policy mandating that airlines offer 60% of seats without extra charges seeks to enhance fairness in air travel. While it is hailed as a passenger-friendly move, the industry expresses concerns about its financial implications, urging a review by the civil aviation ministry.
